“But if we confess our sins ,
He is therefore faithful and just,
that he forgives our sins and us
cleanses from all injustice1 John 1:9
This verse has always given me hope and comfort because it contains a great promise from God. God is just and faithful: His promises last for eternity.
But if we confess, He forgives!
Even during my time in youth group, when I hadn't quite decided to serve God, I became aware of this verse. Although I encountered all sorts of things and was entangled in one sin or another, this promise nevertheless sustained and strengthened me.
Although I wasn't deeply rooted in the world, I only made a clear and unequivocal decision for Jesus at the beginning of my adolescence. During my time in youth group, we were always hanging out with the same people and repeatedly got into trouble. We bullied others and led a lifestyle that didn't align with God's word.
Nevertheless, I always knew: God is faithful and just – His promise stands. When I come to Him in prayer and sincerely repent of my sins, He forgives me. And thank God, God has always shown me grace.
Especially when I confessed my sins and humbled myself deeply before God, I was repeatedly able to experience this freedom of forgiveness. Conversations with my father were also formative for me during this time.
He cleanses from all injustice
What impressed me most was that God changes us beyond forgiveness. He changes our thinking, feeling, and actions – He cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
Before my conversion, I deliberately bullied other classmates. In those moments, I didn't really think about what I was doing. But after my conversion, I was able to perceive how His grace gradually changed me more and more, and I was able to let go of certain habits.
A life-changing promise!
Looking back today, I am so grateful to God that this particular Bible verse holds a special place in my heart.
I can say from my own experience that confessing my mistakes was the beginning for me – the beginning of a fulfilled life with God.
During my conversion, I gradually became aware that not only confessing one's sins is important and right, but also refraining from doing so. Only then can God work with us and can we truly grow spiritually.
I often use this verse, especially in my work with youth groups. If we confess, He forgives. Sincere confession and experiencing true freedom gradually bring about a complete transformation in our lives.
I wish everyone would make the decision to serve Jesus as early as possible in their lives.
Sincerely, I want to encourage you to claim God's promise. Although we are unjust and sinful, God is never unjust. He keeps His word.
Embrace God's life-changing promise—He forgives, He is faithful and just, He even cleanses us from all unrighteousness. If you are honest with Him, He can and will change your life forever.
