John Bunyan | SCM R. Brockhaus | 286 pages | €15.99

"The Pilgrim's Journey" is a classic of Christian literature. It is a vivid account of a Christian's life, impressive not only for its narrative but also for the unique circumstances of its creation. Because the English Baptist preacher John Bunyan refused to submit to the Anglican-Catholic state church, he was arrested in 1660 and sentenced to twelve years in prison. Three years after his release, he was imprisoned again for disobeying the ban on preaching. During his years of incarceration, he wrote several books, including his magnum opus, "The Pilgrim's Journey to Eternity."

It tells the story of a man who comes from the city of "Destruction" and is led to repentance by the evangelist's message. His pilgrimage to the "Heavenly City of Zion" then begins. Along the way, he encounters a series of people and places that symbolically represent the challenges in the life of a Christian. The story vividly illustrates how many different influences affect us and try to lead us astray from the path of following Jesus. The reader is emphatically warned against abandoning the path of abstinence and devotion to Christ.

"The Pilgrimage" is also available as an MP3 audiobook and is sure to be an enjoyable way to pass the time during car journeys or other daily activities. In addition, there are special editions for children with wonderful illustrations and short text passages for reading aloud or reading independently.
