For decades, esotericism has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity. The diverse spectrum of esoteric teachings seems appealing and promises bliss. Words like sin are becoming increasingly unpopular, and the concept of reincarnation—the transition of a person's soul into a new body and a new existence—sounds more attractive than the idea of hell. But is life really about what we want to hear, or about a genuine interest in the truth?
Esotericism – a spiritual path to knowledge
Esotericism is a broad field encompassing various schools of thought and practices. According to its literal meaning, it can be understood as a doctrine accessible only to an inner circle. At the same time, esotericism represents a spiritual process of self-discovery that a person undertakes internally. Thus, it places the pursuit of higher knowledge and the discovery of one's own divinity at its core.
What initially sounds very positive, however, is reminiscent of Satan's promises in the Garden of Eden. As it says in the first book of Moses: "The serpent said to the woman, 'You will not certainly die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil'" (Genesis 3:4-5) . Just as in the time of Adam and Eve, Satan still promises us immortality, enlightenment, and godhood today. All three points are directly related to one another and lead to human self-aggrandizement.
One of the most significant differences from biblical teaching lies in the view of humanity. From an esoteric perspective, human beings are seen as inherently good. Their challenge lies solely in penetrating to this core and recognizing themselves by dissolving their ego. This precludes any self-understanding of the sinner from the outset and renders salvation through Jesus Christ unnecessary.
Thus, the greatest danger in the esoteric scene lies in the reduction of Jesus Christ to a mere spiritual teacher. In this way, His true nature and work of redemption not only fade into the background but are completely ignored. Instead, humanity itself is seen as the creator, capable of overcoming everything through its own willpower.
This conviction, in turn, renders Jesus Christ superfluous as one's Lord. Consequently, the aim is human self-glorification. This runs like a red thread through all of esotericism and is reminiscent of the pride of Satan, who was cast out of heaven because of his desire to be equal to God.
Jesus is the way to life
In contrast to esotericism, the Bible shows us a completely different path.
Here, God takes center stage in our lives. Instead of seeking the divine within ourselves through meditation, we turn to God in prayer and discuss everything on our hearts with Him. Through the Bible, He has revealed His will to us, which we should follow in our faith. Together with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God provides us with the right direction for our lives. In this way, we practice humility and obedience to God and allow Him to work in us.
For this, we don't need to enlist the services of spiritual gurus, because in Jesus Christ we have the best example at our side. As the Son of God, He led a sinless life on earth, which He ultimately sacrificed for us so that we might live eternally through Him. This is the love of God expressed in its pure selflessness. It is also this love that compels us to place our lives in the service of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to submit our egos to His will.
His character gradually influences us, so that our lives are marked by humility and love for our neighbor. In this way, we bear witness to Jesus Christ to our fellow human beings, so that they too may find truth and salvation through God's grace. As followers of Jesus, we represent our Lord and Savior as the true light. This will always be clearly and distinctly different from the blinding light of Satan.
