Exciting and gripping until the very last page. These adjectives are usually more fitting for a thriller than a book of Christian literature. And yet, they also apply well to the book "Twelve Ordinary People" by John MacArthur.

The book is about the disciples of Jesus. The author paints portraits of their lives and describes them as they were – as ordinary people with all the weaknesses and problems that are familiar to us even today. While reading, each disciple comes alive; you almost feel as if you've met them personally. Their character traits and their relationships with their fellow disciples and with the Lord Jesus are portrayed in great detail.

This book is not only a captivating read that enriches our general biblical knowledge – we can also derive a great deal from it for our spiritual growth.

If we look at the different character traits of the disciples and see how Jesus deals with them, we can apply much of it to our own lives.

The disciples obeyed Jesus' call and allowed themselves to be transformed by him, so that they themselves could ultimately change the world on his behalf. This call applies to us today as well – let us learn from his disciples.
